It’s hard to pinpoint exactly when Huck finally adopted us. He showed up on the porch one night, and then he was gone the next morning. Then he came back. Then he left again. Rinse and repeat. Suffice it to say, Huckle Butt was his own man doing his own thing. For a while anyway. Once he figured out where the groceries were coming from, he started sticking closer to the house.

Depending on who’s doing the talking, the Huckster is either an American Foxhound or a Treeing Walker Coonhound. One way or another, there’s no doubt that he ain’t nothing BUT a hound dog when you hear him howl. He ain’t never caught a rabbit (or a coon, or a squirrel) but he sure has hollered at a bunch of ‘em.

It’s entirely possible that Huckie Boy is part cat because he seems to have nine lives. He’s burned up 4 or 5 of ‘em already: attacked by another dog, bit by a rattlesnake, attacked by another dog again, and then again. We finally decided we liked having him around as much as he liked being around, so we built him his own kennel and run to keep him away from the lions and tigers and bears.

Now days, Huck shares his run with another rescue, his adopted sister Tater Chip. He’s slowed down a little bit too, mostly just dreaming about chasing coons up a tree. But every once in a while, you’ll hear that telltale howl when ol' Huckle B sees one. Or thinks he does.
